TOP TRAVEL TIPS
Here are our top three travel tips when planning a trip to Cairo:
Whilst the best way to explore Cairo is on foot, if you are looking to either travel from the airport or to a different part of the city, then be sure to book a reputable taxi. You can use Uber, but it’s also worth downloading a local ridesharing app, Careem too! Make sure you double-check your driver’s license plates as Egyptian license plates include Arabic letters. You can also travel by the metro too which is relatively easy to use - if in doubt use line 3!
You can only drink alcohol in only licensed restaurants and bars. The government takes a zero-tolerance approach to drugs, which are illegal in Egypt. Alcohol will not be available (apart from a small selection of licenced restaurants) during Ramadan. Add any restaurants you want to travel to the ‘Eat & Drink’ section of your Pinboard.
Whilst travelling in Egypt, it is advisable to dress conservatively. Create a packing check list in Pogo Pocket and make sure you have outfits that cover your shoulders and knees. It’s wise to balance practicality and comfort with cultural sensitivity. It’s worthwhile packing a scarf or a hat to cover your hair when needed and make sure you pack
comfortable walking shoes for Cairo’s uneven streets and historical sites.
